Elephants

An elephant is the only mammal
that cannot jump.
I guess that's why it stands here
in the middle of the living room
while we serve tea on its back
and speak in hushed tones.

  1. Hard to walk around it, isn't it? I have never been any good at walking around the elephant in the room.

    1. Oh, I've never been good at that, either. I find it easier to yell, "Hey, look, everyone! An elephant!" Some people really, really don't like that, though.

    2. I agree. But what do you find on your journey that does not include walking around an elephant?

    3. I'm not sure if I understand your question. But I'll try to answer.

Sometimes I try to make friends with the elephants.

Some of them are rather like stray cats and if you feed them too much, they'll never go away. But it's not always bad to have a cat or two adopt you.

Other times, I find it's better not to feed them, but just to learn to co-exist with them.

I find they often shrink and become easier to live with if you talk to them and don't just ignore them.

And since so many other people have their own elephants, talking about them is good. Maybe we can build an elephant sanctuary or something.

Life is not all about the elephants. But if you ignore them, they can take up a lot of room in your living room. And they poop a lot. And they might occasionally step on you. So acknowledging them can make life a lot easier.

    4. I find that telling myself the truth is essential. That was all I meant. To be blunt, I suck at denial. Always have. I used to to know someone that I attempted to help and would say to them that if there is one person you should always be able to depend on for the truth is you.

What are your thoughts on that?

    5. How do you try to make friends with them? I can never manage to make friends with lies.

    6. Oh, I wasn't talking about making friends with lies. I was talking about making friends with the things most people don't want to talk about, don't want to face.

    7. Most people? What do you mean by that?

    8. I mean most people. Many people. A lot of people. I don't know, I haven't done a study to determine exactly what percentage of people prefer to avoid which topics.

    9. I kind have a theory why ntellikng people about being abused is often met with disbelief. No one likes thinking about abuse. It is distresing, so when someone tells a tale of abuse, often people would rather deny the fact of abuse. Because if they acknowledge it, they will be compelled to do something about the abuse! And abuse is akin to torture. So someone who was/is being abused is/was being tortured.
