Dawning

Your hair was like sun seen through rain,
wet with saltwater and gorgeous as any dawn.
The shell of my body opened
and you emerged, squinting in the light.
Waves of pain so sweet I cried
rippled through me, and you,
head angled like a hungry gull,
squawked in surprise and fury
at being spit from your sea
like Jonah from the belly of the whale.
Your lips clamped around my nipple
and sucked at my soul.
