It was July but it was cool,
the night black and foggy when I stepped out
about two and stood for a long moment
beneath the sky outside the emergency room doors
and turned away from the red glow of ambulance lights
to breathe
and then I slipped back through the automatic doors
that slid shut behind me with a hiss
and wound my way through dimly lit hospital halls
to the room where you lay.
