In a Magdalene Laundry, County Cork, 1967

The air was so heavy-laden
with moisture, you could almost drink from it.
There was the chlorine of bleach, harsh
on the hands and sharp in the sinuses.
Blisters turned to calluses on hands
rubbed raw on washboards.
Did you know you can save your soul
if you scrub enough sheets?

Shapeless blue dresses hung from us
like shrouds and dark nuns floated
like ghosts with faces ironed flat.
This is what it must be like in Hell.
We’re all sinners at heart,
aren’t we?
